Created by John Hughes (credited as Edmond Dantès) and Amy Holden Jones, Beethoven is serie which revolves around a family attempting to control the antics of their pet Saint Bernard (named Beethoven). When the Newtons first bring home a tiny St. Bernard puppy, they would have never guessed how much his larger-than-life personality would change their lives forever. From his adorable beginnings as a puppy on the run from dog-nappers to his travels across America and hunting for lost pirate treasure, this film series features all 8 of his hilarious disaster-prone adventures along with his resolve to become a hero at the end of the day! The first two films were theatrical releases and all subsequent releases have been direct to video. The original Beethoven hit theaters in April 1992. Its opening grossed $7,587,565. It was the year’s 26th largest grossing film in the U.S. at $57,114,049.

3. Beethoven’s 3rd (2000)
The story begins as Richard Newton, his wife Beth, daughter Sara and son Brennan prepare for a cross-country drive to a family reunion. For Richard, it’s a dream vacation. For his family, it’s boredom on wheels – until the appearance of a surprise passenger: the huge, rollicking, slobbering, lovable dog, Beethoven. Richard has promised to take Beethoven to the reunion and deliver him to his owner, Richard’s brother. 5. Beethoven’s 5th (2003)
In the fifth installment in the Beethoven film series, When Sara Newton and Beethoven are sent to spend the summer with Sara’s uncle, clumsy mechanic Freddy Kablinski (her mom’s brother) in an old mining town called Quicksilver, the mischievous Beethoven “digs up” a clue to the whereabouts of the legendary, hidden fortune of two bank robbers named Moe and Rita Selig. Now everyone wants to be his best friend as his discovery unleashes a frenzy of treasure hunting among the community’s creatures. With help from Uncle Freddy and a boy named Garrett, Sara and Beethoven try to help uncover a secret that has been in the little town for years. 6. Beethoven’s Big Break (2008)
Fall in love with the big-hearted, slobbering 185-pound St. Bernard, Beethoven, in this howl-arious adventure that features animal handler Eddie works with lots of creatures, he has a strict NO PETS ALLOWED policy and won’t let his son Billy keep adorable stray dog Beethoven and his family of puppies. But when dog-nappers steal the canine star of the movie Eddie’s working on, the studio big shots must quickly find a replacement and unexpectedly cast the lumbering canine as their next big star. Through his rambunctious antics and larger-than-life personality, Beethoven not only crashes into Hollywood but into Eddie’s heart as well.
The film could be considered a reboot of the series, as it completely disregards all storylines from the previous five films, though some scenes in this film include references to the original storyline.
7. Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure (2011)
‘Tis the season to celebrate with everyone’s favorite St. Bernard, Beethoven, in an all-new, heartwarming holiday adventure where the hilarious canine speaks for the first time! When Henry the elf flees the North Pole with Santa’s sleigh and his magical bag of toys, he crash-lands the precious cargo in a suburban neighborhood tree. 8. Beethoven’s Treasure Tail (2014)
Get ready to howl with laughter in this all-new family comedy starring America’s favorite St. Bernard, the one and only Beethoven! After a doggone disaster of a movie shoot, the big-hearted pooch and his trainer, Eddie, are heading home when they get stranded in a small coastal village. When Beethoven befriends a local boy, he helps him find a pirate map to lost treasure and together they em-bark on an adventure that brings the whole town together. It’s a heartwarming “tail” about finding fun wherever your nose leads you.

All five of the original Beethoven movies share a central canine protagonist, and they follow the Newton family as they raise and care for their dog, Beethoven. Beethoven’s story in the Christmas special is self-contained. The movies Beethoven’s Big Break and Beethoven’s Treasure Tail serve as a reboot of the franchise, in which Beethoven is turned into a movie and causes mayhem for a different set of characters than the Newtons.
