2. Tremors (1990)

A pulse-pounding love letter to 1950s creature features that delivers horror and humor in equal measure, Tremors is a bonafide cult classic that has grabbed audiences’ affections ever since it’s release and spawned a successful franchise that continues to this day.

Tremors (1990) tired of their dull lives in the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada, repairmen Val McKee (Bacon) and Earl Bassett (Ward) try to skip town. However, they happen upon a series of mysterious deaths and a concerned seismologist Rhonda (Carter) studying unnatural readings below the ground. With the help of eccentric survivalist couple Burt and Heather Gummer (Gross and McEntire), the group fights for survival against giant, wormlike monsters hungry for human flesh. The race is on to overcome these slimy subterraneans and find a way to higher ground, in this enjoyable thriller co-starring Michael Gross and Reba McEntire.

An affectionate throwback to 1950s creature features, Tremors reinvigorates its genre tropes with a finely balanced combination of horror and humor. It had a budget of $10 million and ended up grossing $16,667,084 at the domestic box office, which made it financially successful, though far below projected numbers.

3. Tremors 2: Aftershocks (1996)

The second installment of the Tremors franchise, Tremors 2: Aftershocks is direct-to-video sequel to Tremors, in which the character of Earl Bassett, returning from the first film, is hired to deal with a subterranean “graboid” infestation at a Mexican oilfield. Knowing that he cannot face the monsters alone, Earl recruits Burt Gummer, another veteran of the incident in Nevada, to supply the firepower. There is only one problem: the Graboids have now evolved into creatures able to attack above ground.

This unjustly neglected direct-to-video sequel delivers the same winning mixture of cornpone and gore that made the original Tremors a cult classic. Although Kevin Bacon is missing, Michael Gross and the wonderful Fred Ward reprise their roles from the first film. A hoot-and-a-half for horror and SF fans, Tremors 2 has some genuine scares and a welcome sense of humour.
