Everyone knows that the holidays can be a stressful time, full of last minute shopping and family feuds, but Modern Family holiday Episodes has no exception to this rule, but the Dunphy-Pritchitt clan knows how to make it funny! This post is about how to watch Modern Family Christmas episodes, to get in the Christmas spirit!
Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan is a wonderfully large and blended family with Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neil) sitting at the head. By his side is his vivacious, younger second wife, Gloria (Sofia Vergara), and together they are navigating life with their youngest son, Joe, and Gloria’s son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez), who is heading off to college to explore the world on his own terms. Meanwhile, Jay’s grown daughter, Claire (Julie Bowen), and her husband, Phil (Ty Burrell), are learning to navigate life as empty-nesters with the youngest, Luke (Nolan Gould), now out of high school and looking to his next move; middle daughter Alex (Ariel Winter) is learning how to balance academia and a social life, and eldest Haley (Sarah Hyland) is still living at home as she pursues a career and love. Then there’s Claire’s brother and Jay’s grown son, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), and his husband, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), who are about to enter the dreaded middle-school years with their newly discovered, gifted daughter, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons). These three families are unique unto themselves, and together they give us an honest and often hilarious look into the sometimes warm, sometimes twisted, embrace of the modern family.
So if you’re trying to figure out how to watch the Modern Family Christmas episodes in order to get in the Christmas spirit. Then here I recommend watching all of the Christmas Modern Family episodes in chronological order as mentioned.
Best Modern Family Christmas Episodes in Order to Watch
1. Undeck the Halls (Season 1, Episode 10)
This holiday episode was lighter on the funny moments than most episodes of Modern Family, which isn’t to say that it wasn’t plenty funny. It substituted those with more heartfelt moments.
In the episode, Claire and Phil threaten to take away Christmas when they discover that one of the kids tried a cigarette but none wants to admit it. Alex takes the blame to save Christmas but it is revealed that they were all saying the truth from the start. Cameron and Mitchell take Lily to get her first picture with Santa at the Mall, but they complain to the management that Santa is not jolly enough for the kids, leads to Santa losing his job. Jay wants to introduce Manny and Gloria to some Christmas traditions while they want to do the same to Jay with Colombian Christmas traditions.
2. Express Christmas (Season 3, Episode 10)
In the second Christmas episode of the series, while the entire family is together on December 16, they suddenly realize that circumstances will prevent them from being together for Christmas Day on December 25. Phil instantly comes up with a plan: members of the family are paired up and challenged to work together on specific assignments to obtain an object or perform a task that afternoon so that a makeshift emergency (‘Express’) Christmas, to be held that evening, will seem just like a “Traditional Christmas.” Each of the missions ends in disaster – but in their pursuits, the family is brought closer together as a result.
3. The Old Man & the Tree (Season 5, Episode 10)
This Christmas episode of Modern Family “The Old Man & The Tree” is the nimblest, most elegantly structured episode all year, and easily the best Christmas show Modern Family has ever done.
In the episode, Jay takes Manny out to cut down their own Christmas tree, but things get a little out of hand. Gloria is on edge with her mom in town, not aided in the least by her immediate close-knit bond with Claire. Cam takes Lily to a charity event where they experience the true meaning of Christmas; Haley and Alex get jobs as Elf and Mrs. Claus at the mall, but run into trouble when Santa takes a break on the job. Phil attempts to meet his goal of traveling the length of home to Canada on a stairmaster, while Luke does everything he can to keep his dad out of the basement.
4. White Christmas (Season 7, Episode 9)
It’s holiday season for the Dunphy-Tucker-Pritchett clan, and everyone’s got a Christmas wish. In an effort to have the picture-perfect white Christmas she’s always dreamed of, Gloria rents a cabin in the mountains for the whole family to celebrate the holiday. Unfortunately, when they arrive, there are some unexpected factors like the weather and an eccentric random guest, who is already staying in the cabin. Meanwhile, the family are also preoccupied with their own agendas Mitch and Cam determined to make up for their bad caroling performance from last year. Haley and Andy can’t keep their hands off each other, and Jay has a huge announcement to make that catches Claire off guard.
5. Snow Ball (Season 8, Episode 9)
With an episode titled “Snow Ball,” a little Christmas cheer is expected, but instead the episode focuses on a high school dance. A fancy holiday gala at school finds Manny and Luke trying to avoid a disastrous outcome thanks to a texting mistake. Eager to pitch in, Claire, Gloria, Mitchell and Cameron volunteer to help at the dance and get involved in the night’s shenanigans, including Claire and Gloria trying to set up a single mom with the principal, while Mitchell takes an interest in the school bully.
6. Stuck in a Moment (Season 10, Episode 10)
In one of the best holiday episodes of Modern Family “Stuck in a Moment”, Hayley wants to give the family a Christmas gift they will never forget if she can just figure out the perfect time. Gloria receives a gift from Colombia that causes a spider infestation and forces them to celebrate Christmas at Claire’s. Phil borrows the Christmas tree for a house opening, which irritates Claire, who sees it and steals it back without him knowing. Mitch and Cam try to figure out what Cal wants for Christmas from the mall Santa, whom Mitch put on trial. Haley and Dylan try to tell Claire they’re having a baby but can’t find the right moment. Alex’s hair turns grey from the stress of hiding their secret. Eventually, they tell the whole family who are excited, except for Phil and Claire who are confused.
7. The Last Christmas (Season 11, Episode 9)
Change can’t be denied as Modern Family celebrates one final Christmas! “The Last Christmas” is a tight, largely funny episode that creates comedy out of the hectic nature of the holidays and the generally dysfunctional dynamic of the family unit.
In the episode, The families gather for Christmas dinner at Mitchell and Cameron’s house. Cam has a seating plan but for various reasons nobody wants to sit in their assigned seat: Gloria doesn’t want to sit next to Phil because she interviewed with another realty company; Claire does not want to sit with her father because she knows he’ll ask her to work at his dog bed company; Haley and Mitchell discover that Cam has a hidden first class ticket to Missouri; Luke’s new relationship with Sherry is exposed, causing more conflict. During grace, the family cannot stop sniping at one another, so Cam reveals that it may be their last Christmas together since he is job interviewing at an out-of-state college. Everyone mentions their own future possibilities, leading to apologies and reconciliation. Later, they pose in matching pajamas for a family Christmas picture.
