List of iPhone in order

List of iPhone in Order of Release

This list counts down every Apple iPhone release in order, starting in 2007, more than a decade ago, to the iPhone 14 pro max smartphone.

The iPhone is a line of smartphones designed and marketed by Apple Inc. These devices use Apple’s iOS mobile operating system. The first-generation iPhone was announced by then-Apple CEO Steve Jobs on January 9, 2007. Since then, Apple has annually released new iPhone models and iOS updates. As of November 1, 2018, more than 2.2 billion iPhones had been sold. As of 2022, the iPhone accounts for 15.6% of global smartphone market share.

The iPhone was the first mobile phone with multi-touch technology. Since the iPhone’s launch, it gained larger screen sizes, video-recording, waterproofing, and many accessibility features. Up to iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, iPhones had a single button on the front panel with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Since iPhone X, iPhone models have switched to a nearly bezel-less front screen design with Face ID facial recognition, and app switching activated by gestures. Touch ID is still used for the budget iPhone SE series.

The iPhone is one of the two largest smartphone platforms in the world alongside Android, and is a large part of the luxury market. The iPhone has generated large profits for Apple, making it one of the world’s most valuable publicly traded companies. The first-generation iPhone was described as a “revolution” for the mobile phone industry and subsequent models have also garnered praise The iPhone has been credited with popularizing the smartphone and slate form factor, and with creating a large market for smartphone apps, or “app economy”. As of January 2017, Apple’s App Store contained more than 2.2 million applications for the iPhone.

All iPhones in Order From Oldest to Newest

1. iPhone (1st generation)

iPhone

One of the two biggest smartphone platforms in the world, along with Android, and a big part of the luxury market. The iPhone, the first model of iPhone and the first smartphone, has made Apple a lot of money and made it one of the most valuable publicly traded companies in the world. The first iPhone was called a “revolution” in the mobile phone business, and the models that came after it were also praised.

The device was different from other mobile phones because it didn’t have many physical buttons and didn’t have a stylus. Instead, it had only a few physical buttons and a touch screen. It had quad-band GSM cellular connectivity with GPRS and EDGE for data transfer, and it used continuous internet access and onboard processing to support features that weren’t related to voice communication.

2. iPhone 3G

iPhone 3G

The iPhone 3G is a smartphone that was designed and marketed by Apple Inc.; it is the second generation of iPhone, successor to the original iPhone, and was introduced on June 9, 2008, at the WWDC 2008 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, United States.

The iPhone 3G is internally similar to its predecessor, but included several new hardware features, such as GPS, 3G data and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA. The device was originally loaded with the concurrently launched iPhone OS 2.0. In addition to other features (including push email and turn-by-turn navigation), this new operating system introduced the App Store—Apple’s new distribution platform for third-party applications.

3. iPhone 3GS

iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS (originally styled iPhone 3G S) is a smartphone that was designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the third generation iPhone and the successor to the iPhone 3G. It was unveiled on June 8, 2009[9] at the WWDC 2009 which took place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

This iPhone is named “3GS” where “S” stood for Speed (Phil Schiller had mentioned it in the launch keynote). Improvements include performance, a 3-megapixel camera with higher resolution and video ability, voice control, and support for 7.2 Mbit/s HSDPA downloading (but remains limited to 384 kbps uploading as Apple had not implemented the HSUPA protocol). It was released in the United States, Canada, and six European countries on June 19, 2009, in Australia and Japan on June 26, and internationally in July and August 2009.

The iPhone 3GS runs Apple’s iOS operating system. It was succeeded as Apple’s flagship smartphone in 2010 by the iPhone 4. On June 24, 2010 an 8 GB model was released, discontinuing the 16 and 32 GB models, the 8 GB 3GS continued in production until September 2012 when the iPhone 5 was announced.

4. iPhone 4

iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 is a smartphone that was designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the fourth generation of the iPhone lineup, succeeding the iPhone 3GS and preceding the 4S. Following a number of notable leaks, the iPhone 4 was first unveiled on June 7, 2010, at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, and was released on June 24, 2010, in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan. The iPhone 4 introduced a new hardware design to the iPhone family, which Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs touted as the thinnest smartphone in the world at the time; it consisted of a stainless steel frame which doubled as an antenna, with internal components situated between two panels of aluminosilicate glass. The iPhone 4 introduced Apple’s new high-resolution “Retina Display” (with a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch), while maintaining the same physical size and aspect ratio as its precursors, Apple’s A4 system-on-chip, along with iOS 4—which notably introduced multitasking functionality and app folders. It was the first iPhone at the time to include a front-facing camera, which made possible Apple’s new FaceTime video chat service, and the first to be released in a version for CDMA networks, ending AT&T’s period as the exclusive carrier of iPhone products in the United States.

5. iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S (originally styled as iPhone 4 S, retroactively stylized with a lowercase ‘s’ as iPhone 4s as of September 2013) is a smartphone that was designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the fifth generation of the iPhone, succeeding the iPhone 4 and preceding the iPhone 5. It was announced on October 4, 2011, at Apple’s Cupertino campus, and was the final Apple product announced in the lifetime of former Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs, who died the following day.

This iPhone was named “4S” where the “S” stood for Siri, an intelligent personal assistant that was initially exclusive to the 4S and later included in future Apple products. Retaining most of the external design of the iPhone 4, the 4S hosted major internal upgrades, including an upgrade to the Apple A5 chipset, and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording. It debuted with iOS 5, the fifth major version of iOS, Apple’s mobile operating system, that introduced features including iCloud, iMessage, Notification Center, Reminders, and Twitter integration.

6. iPhone 5

iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 is a smartphone that was designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the 6th generation iPhone, succeeding both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, and preceding both the iPhone 5S and 5C. It was formally unveiled as part of a press event on September 12, 2012, and subsequently released on September 21, 2012. The iPhone 5 was the first iPhone to be announced in September, and setting a trend for subsequent iPhone releases, the first iPhone to be completely developed under the guidance of Tim Cook and the last iPhone to be overseen by Steve Jobs. The iPhone 5’s design was used three times, first with the iPhone 5 itself in 2012, then with the 5S in 2013, and finally with the first-generation iPhone SE in 2016.

The iPhone 5 featured major design changes in comparison to its predecessor. These included an aluminum-based body which was thinner and lighter than previous models, a taller 4-inch screen with a nearly 16:9 aspect ratio, the Apple A6 system-on-chip, LTE support, and Lightning, a new compact dock connector which replaced the 30-pin design used by previous iPhone models. This was the second Apple phone to include its new Sony-made 8 MP camera, which was first introduced on the iPhone 4S.

7. iPhone 5c

iPhone 5c

The iPhone 5C (marketed as iPhone 5c) is a smartphone that was designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is part of the sixth generation of the iPhone. The device was unveiled on September 10, 2013, and released on September 20, 2013, along with its higher-end counterpart, the iPhone 5S. The “c” in the iPhone 5c’s name stands for Color.

The iPhone 5C is a variant of the iPhone 5, with similar hardware specifications but a hard-coated polycarbonate shell instead of the aluminum of the original iPhone 5. The iPhone 5C was available in several color options and shipped with iOS 7. The iPhone 5C was released at a lower price point than the new flagship 5S; unlike Apple’s usual practice of lowering the price of the previous model upon release of a new version, the iPhone 5 was explicitly discontinued and replaced by the 5C. On September 9, 2014, the 16 and 32 GB iPhone 5C models were replaced by the 8 GB model upon the announcement of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. On September 9, 2015, the 8 GB version was discontinued in all markets except for India, where it continued to be available February 17, 2016.

8. iPhone 5s

iPhone 5s

The iPhone 5S (stylized and marketed as iPhone 5s) is a smartphone that was designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the seventh generation of the iPhone, succeeding the iPhone 5, and unveiled in September 2013, alongside the iPhone 5C.

The iPhone 5S maintains almost the same external design as its predecessor, the iPhone 5, although the 5S received a new white/gold color scheme in addition to white/silver and space gray/black. The 5S has vastly upgraded internal hardware, however. It introduced the A7 64-bit dual-core system-on-chip, the first 64-bit processor to be used on a smartphone, accompanied by the M7 “motion co-processor”. A redesigned home button with Touch ID, a fingerprint recognition system which can be used to unlock the phone and authenticate App Store and iTunes Store purchases, was also introduced. The camera was also updated with a larger aperture and a dual-LED flash optimized for different color temperatures. Earphones known as EarPods were included with the 5S, and Apple released accessories including a case and a dock. It had a 4-inch display, similar to the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C.

The iPhone 5S was succeeded as Apple’s flagship smartphone by the larger iPhone 6 in September 2014. On March 21, 2016, the iPhone 5S was discontinued following the release of the iPhone SE, which incorporated internal hardware similar to the iPhone 6S while retaining the smaller form factor and design of the 5S.

9. iPhone 6

iPhone 6

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are smartphones that were designed and marketed by Apple Inc. They are the eighth generation of the iPhone, succeeding the iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S, and were announced on September 9, 2014, and released on September 19, 2014. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus jointly were themselves replaced as the flagship devices of the iPhone series by the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus on September 9, 2015. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus include larger 4.7 and 5.5 inches (120 and 140 mm) displays, a faster processor, upgraded cameras, improved LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity and support for a near field communications-based mobile payments offering.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus received positive reviews, with critics regarding their redesign, specifications, camera, and battery life as being improvements over previous iPhone models. However, aspects of the design of iPhone 6 were also criticized, including plastic strips on the rear of the device for its antenna that disrupted the otherwise metal exterior, and the screen resolution of the standard-sized iPhone 6 being lower than other devices in its class. The iPhone 6 sold extremely well, making it the best-selling iPhone model and the most successful smartphone to date.

10. iPhone 6 Plus

iPhone 6 Plus

The oversized iPhone 6 Plus marks a rare instance of Apple being an industry follower rather than a trendsetter. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus goes up against similar-sized Android phones which have been available for years at every point on the price spectrum. However, there’s no stylus, no multitasking, and no feature that really takes advantage of the iPhone 6 Plus compared to the slightly smaller iPhone 6. Even so, if you like big phones, you’ll love the iPhone 6 Plus for its great battery life and phenomenal camera. Optical image stabilisation allows for some unbelievably clear and detailed shots in low light.

11. iPhone 6s

iPhone 6s

The iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus (stylized and marketed as iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus) are smartphones that were designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. They are the ninth generation of the iPhone. They were announced on September 9, 2015, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco by Apple CEO Tim Cook, with pre-orders beginning September 12 and official release on September 25, 2015. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus were succeeded by the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus on September 7, 2016 and were discontinued with the announcement of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR on September 12, 2018.

The iPhone SE can shoot Live Photos and has features like Retina Flash and the option to have Hey Siri activated without the need to be plugged into a power source.

14. iPhone 7

iPhone 7

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are smartphones that were designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. They are the tenth generation of the iPhone. They were announced on September 7, 2016, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco by Apple CEO Tim Cook, and were released on September 16, 2016, succeeding the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus as the flagship devices in the iPhone series. Apple also released the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in numerous countries worldwide throughout September and October 2016. They were succeeded as flagship devices by the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus on September 12, 2017, and were discontinued with the announcement of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro on September 10, 2019.

16. iPhone 8

iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are smartphones designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. They along with the iPhone X make up the 11th generation of the iPhone. The iPhone 8 was released on September 22, 2017, succeeding the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus respectively[8] and preceding the iPhone XR. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were discontinued by Apple on April 15, 2020 with the release of the second-generation iPhone SE.

Except for the addition of a glass back, the designs of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are largely similar to that of their predecessors. Notable changes include the removal of the rose gold and jet black color variants, addition of inductive charging, a faster processor, and improved cameras and displays. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus share most of their internal hardware with the iPhone X.

17. iPhone 8 Plus

iPhone 8 Plus

18. iPhone X

iPhone X

The iPhone X (Roman numeral “X” pronounced “ten”, also known as iPhone 10)[11][12] is a smartphone designed, developed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is part of the 11th generation of the iPhone. Available for pre-order from October 27, 2017, it was released on November 3, 2017. The naming of the iPhone X (skipping the iPhone 9) is to mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone.

The iPhone X used a glass and stainless-steel form factor and “bezel-less” design, shrinking the bezels while not having a “chin”, unlike many Android phones. It was the first iPhone to use an OLED screen. The home button’s fingerprint sensor was replaced with a new type of authentication called Face ID, which used sensors to scan the user’s face to unlock the device. This face-recognition capability also enabled emojis to be animated following the user’s expression (Animoji). With a bezel-less design, iPhone user interaction changed significantly, using gestures to navigate the operating system rather than the home button used in all previous iPhones. At the time of its November 2017 launch, its price tag of US$999 also made it the most expensive iPhone ever, with even higher prices internationally due to additional local sales and import taxes.

19. iPhone XR

iPhone XR

Apple iPhone XR mobile was launched in September 2018. The phone comes with a 6.10-inch touchscreen display offering a resolution of 828×1792 pixels at a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi) and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The display sports Other for protection. Apple iPhone XR is powered by a hexa-core Apple A12 Bionic processor. It comes with 3GB of RAM. The Apple iPhone XR runs iOS 12 and is powered by a 2942mAh non-removable battery. The Apple iPhone XR supports wireless charging, as well as proprietary fast charging.

20. iPhone XS

iPhone XS

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max (stylized and marketed as iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max; Roman numeral “X” pronounced “ten”) are smartphones designed, developed and marketed by Apple Inc. They are the twelfth-generation flagships of the iPhone, succeeding the iPhone X. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the devices alongside a lower-end model, the iPhone XR, on September 12, 2018, at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park. Pre-orders began on September 14, 2018, and the devices went on sale on September 21.

Improvements besides increased computing speeds include dual-SIM support, filming with stereo audio, and strengthened water resistance. The XS Max was the first plus-sized iPhone to have the newer reduced bezel form factor, as the iPhone X did not have a larger variant.

Apple no longer sells the iPhone XS and XS Max as well as the iPhone 7 and its Plus variant as of September 10, 2019, after the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro announcement. iPhone XS and XS Max are the final models of iPhone to feature 3D Touch.

21. iPhone XS Max

iPhone XS Max

Apple iPhone XS Max mobile was launched in September 2018. The phone comes with a 6.50-inch touchscreen display offering a resolution of 1242×2688 pixels at a pixel density of 458 pixels per inch (ppi). The display sports Other for protection. Apple iPhone XS Max is powered by a hexa-core Apple A12 Bionic processor. The Apple iPhone XS Max supports wireless charging, as well as proprietary fast charging.

22. iPhone 11

iPhone 11

Apple iPhone 11 price fetches you a reasonable smartphone. It is loaded with a lot of quality features. It comes with a waterproof and dust-proof body which is the key attraction of the device. The excellent set of cameras offers excellent images and can record crisp videos. However, expandable storage and a fingerprint scanner would have made it a perfect option to go for around this price range.

The iPhone 11 defines itself as a phone belonging to the iPhone standard with its amazing A13 Bionic chipset and camera improvements. However, the lack of an AMOLED screen for such a pricey model might seem disappointing. If you can increase the budget slightly, you should get the iPhone 11 Pro instead of this phone. However, like an iPhone, the iPhone 11 fares well and can keep you happy.

23. iPhone 11 Pro

iPhone 11 Pro

iPhone 11 Pro mobile was launched on 10th September 2019. The phone comes with a 5.80-inch touchscreen display offering a resolution of 1125×2436 pixels at a pixel density of 458 pixels per inch (ppi). iPhone 11 Pro is powered by a hexa-core Apple A13 Bionic processor. It comes with 4GB of RAM. The iPhone 11 Pro runs iOS 13 and is powered by a 3046mAh non-removable battery. The iPhone 11 Pro supports wireless charging, as well as proprietary fast charging.

24. iPhone 11 Pro Max

iPhone 11 Pro Max

The biggest iPhone in Apple’s lineup, the iPhone 11 Pro Max looks like an incremental upgrade over the iPhone XS Max but it brings some significant changes under the hood. There’s a triple camera setup at the back now, letting you choose between the Wide, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto lenses.

The Camera app makes it seamless to pick one or the other, presenting the Ultra Wide camera as a 0.5x zoom, which is certainly an interesting perspective. All this is backed by improved HDR and a brand new Night Mode, which means you get excellent image and video quality in most conditions. For the first time in years, Apple’s phones not only compete, but often surpass the competition in terms of low light photography.

An area where Apple’s dominance has never really been in doubt has been chip design, and the new Apple A13 Bionic chip continues this tradition. From intensive gaming sessions to editing 4K videos on the go, iPhone 11 Pro Max will handle everything you throw at it with ease, and then some.

There are significant gains to be had in the battery life department as well, and even users with the heaviest of workloads shouldn’t have a problem lasting a full day. Most typical users will find the iPhone 11 Pro Max is, in fact, capable of lasting up to two days on a single charge. iOS 13 brings a host of new features and the promise of regular software updates.

So what’s not to like? Looking beyond that camera module, the price is an obvious deterrent. What’s more, despite paying over a lakh, you get a measly 64GB of internal storage. We also wish Apple adds software features like picture-in-picture that make better use of the big screen.

25. iPhone SE (2nd generation)

iPhone SE (2nd generation)

The second-generation iPhone SE (also known as the iPhone SE 2 or the iPhone SE 2020) is a smartphone designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. It is part of the 13th generation of the iPhone, alongside the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro/Pro Max models. Apple announced the second-generation iPhone SE on April 15, 2020 coinciding with the discontinuation of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. The iPhone SE succeeded the smaller and lighter first-generation iPhone SE. Pre-orders began on April 17, 2020, and the phone was subsequently released on April 24, 2020. It was released with a starting price of US$399, and positioned as a budget phone.

Following the pattern made by the first-generation iPhone SE (which shares the dimensions and form factor of the iPhone 5S, with the internal hardware of the iPhone 6S), the second-generation model shares the dimensions and form factor of the iPhone 8, while sharing selected internal hardware components from the iPhone 11 lineup, including the A13 Bionic system-on-chip (as opposed to the A11 Bionic system-on-chip found in the iPhone 8 series), which allows the phone to utilise the single Wide angle lens Portrait Mode, as on the iPhone XR. It also features the next generation Smart HDR-2 photos, which are marketed as being better than Smart HDR photos on the iPhone XS and iPhone XR.

26. iPhone 12 mini

iPhone 12 mini

The iPhone 12 mini fills a void in the market, and many people looking for a compact flagship-level phone will be pleased with it. This model could be a suitable upgrade for those holding on to older iPhones because they like the size. You get nearly all the same flagship specifications as with the iPhone 12, with the exception of a smaller battery and slower wireless charging. The display is smaller but just as dense, and quality is excellent. Performance is also great, though this phone does get a bit warm when stressed. The iPhone 12 mini can take brilliant photos in the daytime and at night with both its rear cameras and the front one as well. Night mode is supported across all cameras. Games and movies aren’t especially engrossing on the smaller screen but the iPhone 12 mini will do for casual everyday use. iOS 14 is slick and smooth, and you get guaranteed updates for several years.

27. iPhone 12

iPhone 12

Apple iPhone 12 Pro was officially released on October 13, 2020. The phone is powered by the new Apple A14 Bionic Hexa-core processor. The smartphone comes with a 6.1 inches Super Retina XDR OLED capacitive touchscreen, 1170 x 2532 pixels resolution and HDR10 display, True Tone, and Wide color gamut.

The dimension of the smartphone is 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4 mm and it weighs 189 grams. The device supports Single SIM (Nano-SIM and/or eSIM) or Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by) – for China and IP68 dust/water-resistant.

30. iPhone 13 mini

iPhone 13 mini

The iPhone 13 mini is unique (other than the iPhone 12 mini) since every other manufacturer has given up on smaller-sized premium smartphones. It’s easy to carry around and use, but you might find the screen a bit cramped for reading on, and battery life does suffer a little. There’s more than enough power thanks to the Apple A15 Bionic SoC. Storage starts at 128GB and goes up to 512GB, but this phone is expensive. The cameras are excellent, capturing good detail in the daytime and at night. You can’t take macro shots though. The screen doesn’t have a high refresh rate, and the notch can be distracting, but everything looks bright and crisp.

iPhone 13 Pro

The iPhone 13 Pro has all the same hardware as the iPhone 13 Pro Max except for a smaller battery and display. You get sensor-shift stabilisation for the primary camera, and for the first time, you can take macro photos. Optical zoom also goes up to 3X. Apple has introduced new camera features, Cinematic Mode and Photographic Styles. Beyond that, the new A15 Bionic SoC delivers excellent performance. Storage goes up to 1TB, though the top-end variant is extremely expensive. The 120Hz ProMotion display is a big improvement but there’s still an awkward notch that can be distracting. Games and apps run very well, and the stereo speakers are also quite good. Construction quality is excellent and the iPhone 13 Pro is easier to hold and use than its bigger sibling.

The iPhone 14 Pro introduces a new Dynamic Island area instead of a notch, an upgraded 48-megapixel primary camera, and an always-on display. Other improvements such as crash detection and emergency satellite-based SMS communication aren’t entirely relevant in India at the time of launch. It’s available with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage. The new Deep Purple colour option is quite striking but not much has changed about this phone’s looks compared to its past two predecessors. You get the A16 Bionic SoC on the inside, which powers only the new iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max this year. Battery life is decent, and everyday performance is very slick. iOS 16 has a few improvements to customisation and personalisation as well.
