All The Jaws Film Series Movies in Order of Event

1. Jaws (1975)

The novel Jaws by Peter Benchley served as inspiration for Steven Spielberg’s 1975 adaptation. This film follows Martin Brody, the police chief of the fictional summer resort town of Amity Island (played by Roy Scheider). It’s a hot summer on Amity Island, a small community whose main business is its beaches. When new Sheriff Martin Brody discovers the remains of a shark attack victim, his first inclination is to close the beaches to swimmers. This doesn’t sit well with Mayor Larry Vaughn and several of the local businessmen.

However, Mayor Larry Vaughan (Murray Hamilton) and the rest of the town council have other ideas and insist that the beach stay open to keep the local tourism industry afloat. After a string of attacks, the police chief calls in marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and expert shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw). In Quint’s boat, the Orca, the trio sets sail. Although the shark kills Quint, Brody is able to kill it by shooting at the pressurized air tank he has wedged in its mouth. Both Brody and Hooper emerge from the water, unharmed from the shark attack on the sinking Orca, and swim off together.

2. Jaws 2 (1978)

Jaws 2, the first sequel, takes place four years after the events of the original film, the Amity Island residents are trying to put their lives back together by reconstructing the town and opening a new hotel. when a second great white shark makes its way to the shores of the made-up island resort of Amity. Produced by Universal Pictures, directed by Jeannot Szwarc, and starring Roy Scheider once more as Police Chief Martin Brody, who, following a string of shark-related deaths and disappearances, believes that another shark is responsible. But he has trouble winning over the town’s selectmen. After losing his job, he must take charge on his own to save his two sons and a group of teenagers who encounter the shark while out sailing. Can Brody rescue the trapped young sailors, and stop, once and for all, the ferocious, man-eating creature with the jaws of death?

3. Jaws 3-D (1983)

The action of Jaws 3-D relocates from Amity Island to SeaWorld in Florida, an aquatic theme park with submerged pathways and lagoons. The park’s opening day is cut tragically short when a young great white shark sneaks in and attacks water skiers and workers. Having caught the baby shark, it is immediately obvious that the mother shark is nearby. The third installment expands on the characterization of Martin’s sons from the previous two films: Brother Sean Brody (John Putch) comes to visit his older brother Michael Brody (Dennis Quaid), the park’s chief engineer. Sean’s aversion to water stems from “something that happened to him when he was a kid,” implying the events of the preceding films. This installment of the Jaws franchise stands alone from the others in terms of plot and character development.

4. Jaws: The Revenge (1987)

The action returns to Amity Island in Jaws: The Revenge, but the film completely disregards the events of Jaws 3-D. Michael’s (Michael Shannon) ex-girlfriend Kathryn Morgan (Bess Armstrong) or his new profession as a marine biologist at SeaWorld are not addressed in any way. One of the press releases for Jaws: The Revenge from Universal Studios even fails to mention Jaws 3-D, referring instead to the film as the “third film of the remarkable Jaws trilogy.” Martin Brody’s heart had already stopped by the beginning of the film, but his wife Ellen (Lorraine Gary) insists he passed away from terror of the shark. Sean, her youngest son (Mitchell Anderson), a deputy in Amity, is called upon to remove a log from a buoy. A shark attacks him as he does this, killing him instantly. After witnessing the deaths of two sharks, Ellen begins to suspect that a third shark is targeting her family on purpose. Michael (Lance Guest) manages to persuade her to visit him in The Bahamas, where his family resides. However, Ellen is worried that he will be the shark’s next meal because of the nature of his work. Ellen takes a boat to kill the person she believes is stalking her and her family after her granddaughter Thea (Judith Barsi) narrowly escapes a shark attack. When Hoagie (Michael Caine), Michael (Michael Keaton), and Jake (Mario Van Peebles) locate Ellen, they electrocute the shark, causing it to leap out of the water and impale itself on the prow of Ellen’s boat.
